SYSTRA has won a design & build (D&B) contract for a section of the high speed railway line between the cities of Naples and Bari in Italy.

This is a line on which SYSTRA already has experience having won a D&B contract in 2018 for the Naples-Cancello section of the line.

In a Design Joint Venture (JV) with the engineering company SWS, SYSTRA-SOTECNI will carry out the Detailed Design for the Doubling of the Frasso Telesino-Vitulano section (lots Telese-San Lorenzo and San Lorenzo-Vitulano) of the HS/HC Railway line Napoli-Bari.

The Design JV was chosen before the tender phase by the Construction JV led by Ghella and composed of Itinera, Salcef and Coget, all of them main players on the Italian Infrastructure market.

There are two phases to the design. Firstly, the detailed design for the approval scheduled in 6 months before the start of the works, then the detailed design of all the project phases during the execution of the works, to be completed within 3 years.

A JV led by systra

The Design JV is led by SYSTRA (58%) and SYSTRA-SOTECNI and is responsible for the Alignment, Bridges & Viaducts, Stops, MEP (excluding tunnels), Track (demolition of the existing line and construction of the new one), Catenary, Electrical Substations, Signalling, TLC systems (telecommunications) and Low Voltage. SWS (42%) is responsible for tunnels (including MEP), geology, geotechnics, environmental studies, hydrology and hydraulics.

Speaking about this assignment, Amedeo Aita Mari, Managing Director of SYSTRA-SOTECNI said: “Being awarded another contract to work on this major railway line demonstrates the confidence our client has in the abilities of our expert teams. Our proposal for technical improvements was a major factor in being chosen for this assignment, followed by organisation of the design and construction activities and the schedule. We are well on the way to consolidating our position in the railway D&B sector in Italy.”

A challenging project using the BIM method

The project will be fully managed and executed using the BIM method for all disciplines from design to construction, another great challenge for our Italian team after the first BIM experience with the Napoli-Cancello section on the same railway line (Napoli-Bari) and the ongoing designs of the Red Line of Bologna Tramway, Genova Monorail and Messina Tramway (ready to start).

The Naples-Bari railway line is part of Italy’s High Speed/High Capacity (HS/HC) project, one of the country’s biggest railway investment initiatives ever, and it is on one of the corridors of the trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
