United Arab Emirates – Dubai Tram

United Arab Emirates – Dubai Tram

SYSTRA was awarded the contract to project manage Dubai’s LRT/tram line. This line was designed to improve public transport services in Dubai’s Al Sufouh and Marina residential, tourist and business districts.

This LRT project comprised a number of challenges including the need to satisfy customer quality comfort requirements. All stations had to be air-conditioned and equipped with platform screen doors due to the city’s extreme climate.

The introduction of automatic train protection and operation (ATP/ATO) systems was also a major first. This system is compatible with manual sight-based operations thanks to Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) systems. Automatic vehicle protection (AVP) and automated platform screen door systems protect specific points (around signals, station entrances when platform screen doors are open) and supervised vehicle operation (SVO) systems help drivers to align their tram doors with station platform screen doors. Lastly, it’s also the first LRT/tram line in the world to be entirely powered by a ground level third conductor rail.

Inaugurated on November 11th, 2014, this is the United Arab Emirate’s first LRT/tram line. Spanning a total of 9.5 km, it runs from Al Sufouh to Dubai’s Marina and has 11 stations. It also connects to the Dubai monorail and metro network. Work has already started on a second phase to extend the line by a further 4.5 km.

SYSTRA’S Role

SYSTRA started work on the transportation programme for the Al Sufouh district in 2005 at the request of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Then, in 2006, the Group was asked to:

  • Produce a feasibility study
  • Compile basic designs
  • Design documents for the call to tender
  • Evaluate tender bids

In 2008, SYSTRA won the project management contract, which covered:

  • Design verification
  • Works supervision
  • Systems integration

Although the project was put on hold between 2010 and 2011, the line went on to be commissioned on November 11th 2014. SYSTRA then provided assistance during the warranty period to:

  • Check that RAMS (Reliability, Accessibility, Maintainability and Safety) performance was in accordance with contractual requirements
  • Help analyse and resolve flaws,
  • Manage technical and business completion activities.

According to SYSTRA’s project manager and RTA representative, "SYSTRA has a unique understanding of contracting authority and operator considerations. It also successfully met every project objective – to create a safe and reliable transport system using the latest technology to optimise lifecycle costs.”
