Nîmes-Montpellier HSR Rail By-Pass

The Nimes-Montpellier rail by-pass is a ground-breaking project. It’s the first high speed line in France to be specifically designed to handle “combined” passenger/freight traffic in France.

SYSTRA is a member of the OC’VIA Consortium, which won the HSL design and construction contract. SYSTRA is in charge of integrated project management, with SETEC. Its activities include:

  • Preliminary technical designs and feasibility studies (infrastructure and superstructure),
  • The design of the new line, freight links and connections to the national railway network,
  • Management and follow-up of administrative issues and associated procedures,
  • Safety management, verifying all changes made to civil engineering designs and railway equipment,
  • Management of Reliability, Availability and Maintainability activities during the design phase,
  • Interface management,
  • Configuration and documentation management,
  • Technical and quality inspection of infrastructure construction work and railway equipment,
  • Testing assistance, excluding pre-operation testing activities.

The Nimes-Montpellier high speed rail by-pass comprises a number of innovative features, particularly with regard to the infrastructure: the track bed comprises a bituminous sub-ballast layer, sensors to identify the impact of cross-wind speeds on both passenger and freight trains and a V220 => V300 power converter.
