Moldova – Modernisation of the railway network
SYSTRA assessed the feasibility of modernising Moldova’s railway network infrastructure.
Sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine in Eastern Europe, Moldova has a population of 3.5 million. Its railway infrastructures are out-of-date due to lack of public funding even though 2 of its 3 rail corridors constitute a vital link between Ukraine and the EU. Subsequently, roads account for the lion’s share of the modal split.
Moldova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have signed a €52.5 million loan agreement to modernise its railway infrastructures.
Transport infrastructure development opportunities are growing steadily in Moldova. This is SYSTRA’s second contract in the country, following on from the contract to help develop a transport strategy in 2006.
SYSTRA was commissioned to compile a 4-month feasibility study between August and December 2016. Group experts were seconded to Moldova to analyse:
- the infrastructures
- the economy
- the environment
- communication systems.
The team reporting to the project manager also analysed the track and signalling systems.
