Currently, Banedanmark is working to replace all signaling systems on the Danish mainline railway lines and the Copenhagen suburban train. The outdated systems are being replaced by the modern Common European signaling system ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) level 2 on the main line and the urban rail system; CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) on the suburban line network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new signaling system will provide more efficient, reliable and safe train operations and help to significantly increase capacity on Danish railways. There will no longer be visible signals in the landscape as the information is presented in the driver’s cab, and traffic will be controlled and monitored from two new traffic towers in Copenhagen and Fredericia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First country with ERTMS on all lines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The signaling program includes all the necessary changes to infrastructure and equipment in the rolling stock as well as the establishment of new traffic rules. Furthermore, an important aspect is to ensure the functionality of the current signaling systems as the new system is implemented, so that the transition causes least possible inconvenience to traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ERTMS is an important part of the European harmonization of train control systems, which will ensure that trains can cross European borders more easily. Denmark will be the first country in Europe to introduce the system on all mainline railway lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


CBTC on the entire suburban train line

<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the fall of 2022, the last part of the suburban train line transitioned to CBTC operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new signaling system is prepared for the upcoming driverless suburban train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
