# Cycle and Pedestrian Paths

**In Denmark’s larger cities, there is a general ambition to reduce congestion and vehicle emissions. An obvious solution is to increase walking and cycling, which requires a targeted effort to encourage more people to choose these modes of transport. Climate and sustainability are important considerations that benefit from having fewer cars on the roads and should therefore be integrated into urban planning. In addition, cycling and walking have positive effects on public health.**

## Cycling as an alternative to cars

The typical commuting range for cyclists has also expanded with the growing use
of e-bikes and pedelecs, increasing the need to improve cycling infrastructure.
This includes wider cycle paths that can accommodate cargo bikes, road bikes and
city bikes alike. By creating attractive cycle routes and pedestrian-friendly
areas, we can do more to encourage people to choose greener alternatives and
thereby reduce CO2 emissions.

We develop strategies and initiatives that make walking and cycling an
attractive alternative to the car and a natural complement to public transport.
We offer integrated consultancy services covering a wide range of measures, from
pedestrian- and cycle-friendly streets and urban spaces to cycle parking and
innovative solutions, all tailored to the specific context and challenge.

## Safe Routes to School

Roskilde Municipality wanted to improve traffic conditions around
Margretheskolen in Gundsømagle, where approximately 450 pupils and around 60
staff members travel to and from the school every day. The aim was to create
safe and secure routes to school and to encourage more pupils to cycle, walk or
use scooters for their daily journey.

SYSTRA carried out a comprehensive school route analysis focusing on travel
habits, traffic behaviour and locations perceived as unsafe by pupils and
parents. The analysis identified a number of areas and situations in which
vulnerable road users felt at risk, and specific solution proposals were
developed. These proposals are considered to have a significant effect and
support Roskilde Municipality’s objective of creating safer and more attractive
school routes around Margretheskolen.

With the proposed measures, the foundation has now been established for
Margretheskolen’s pupils to travel more safely and confidently to and from
school, while also encouraging more of them to choose healthy and sustainable
modes of transport.

## A Boost for Cycling in Frederikssund Municipality

In Vinge, SYSTRA has helped strengthen the integration between public transport
and cycling through a new, high-quality cycle parking facility designed to the
latest standards for cycle parking equipment, including provisions for e-bikes.

The area in front of the station has space for 171 bicycles in an open, well-lit
and welcoming setting close to bus stops, the cycle superhighway and the S-train
station. It includes locked and covered cycle parking spaces, as well as
dedicated parking spaces for e-bikes with charging facilities. The power supply
for the cycle racks is connected to a solar panel, allowing cyclists to recharge
using energy from natural resources.

The cycle parking project was developed to promote cycling in Frederikssund
Municipality and forms part of the municipality’s masterplan for Vinge Station.

## A Footpath in the Heart of Amager Fælled

Naturpark Amager has been enhanced with five new award-winning landmark hubs at
Amager Fælled. These new areas serve as points of orientation within the
landscape and improve opportunities for exploring the natural surroundings.

In addition to the five hubs, a footpath has been established leading to the
recently completed observation tower, Kalvebod Tower.

SYSTRA provided technical consultancy to ADEPT and LYTT on the Naturpark Amager
project, including the footbridge clad in _yakisugi_-charred timber leading
towards Kalvebod Tower.
