SYSTRA won the Technical Advisory Services contract in September 2014 for the Advanced Train Control System (ATCS) Programme to modernise Sydney\u2019s rail network. This involves gradually migrating trains to ERTMS-2 and deploying other performance enhancing features.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initial contract was for the deployment of the ATCS Programme on the network\u2019s two main lines with a view to extending the Programme to the entire suburban network (around 300 km). Technical advisory services were provided in a number of specialist fields, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Signalling<\/li>
  • ETCS 2 (European Train Control System Level 2)<\/li>
  • Control\/command systems<\/li>
  • Rolling Stock<\/li>
  • Safety of operations<\/li>
  • Operations<\/li>
  • Interface management<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    We provided the customer with strategic support from the design phrase through to tendering and was specifically responsible for project management, including the coordination of all the activities of the specialist teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A number of innovative solutions were developed such as the introduction of automatic train operations (ATO) that could manage 24 trains per hour \u2013 a first using the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). Furthermore, the project involved management of complex interfaces with other projects in progress, and in particular the modernisation of the Traffic Management System (TMS) and fixed and mobile telecommunication systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Benefit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    This project involving the deployment of an ERTMS-2 solution in Sydney with ETCS Level 2 and GSM-R elements is a first in Australia and will serve as a benchmark for the country\u2019s future transport network upgrade programmes (Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
