February 2006

Inauguration of Turin metro on February 4, 2006

Turin automatic metro, based on the VAL system, will be officially inaugurated on February 4, just a few days before the start of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.

SYSTRA has been involved in this project since 1999. Associated with GEODATA SpA from Turin, our company was awarded a comprehensive project management contract (design and works supervision) for the civil engineering for the 1st section of the line (Collegno-Porta Nuova, 9.6 km).

Within the consortium, where it acts as the leader, SYSTRA is in charge of overall project coordination. It is responsible for project design and for the supervision of the construction of the whole line: tunnels, stations and associated structures, installations not linked to the VAL system, depot workshop, station development.
Section 1 was built in just 5 years, which is a record in Italy for a metro construction.

In 2001, this contract was followed by a second one for the design and supervision of the second section (Porta Nuova-Lingotto, 4 km).
In addition, since February 2003, SYSTRA has been put in charge of the preliminary project design work for the extensions to the West and South of the line, over 15 km in all.
SYSTRA has been involved in all the VAL projects in France since 1974 and has now become one of the leading actors in automatic metro construction in Italy, as a member of the Engineering consortium of the automatic metro in Brescia, and in charge of the preliminary design of Palermo automatic metro.
