Turin AGT (Italy)

As far back as 1991, the Turin authorities opted for the construction of a VAL-type LRT, to deal with the problems of pollution and constant traffic jams affecting the city. The decision to award the 2006 Winter Olympics to Turin was the catalyst for the relaunch of the project.

The underground line runs more or less in a straight line from east to west, along the main traffic arteries.

This is Italy’s first automated AGT with no driver or train staff. Work began in December 2000 and the first section from Collegno to Porta Susa was launched on 4th February 2006.

A second underground section from Porta Susa to Porta Nuova is 2 km long and came into service in 2007.

A third section equally underground (Porta Nuova to Lingotto), 3.9 km long, should enter service in 2010.

Since 1999, SYSTRA, as part of the consortium of which it is both leader and technical supervisor, has been responsible for total project management for civil engineering and ancillary equipment (studies and work) for the three sections. In february 2003, SYSTRA was also in charge of preliminary studies for extensions to the line.
