Tram-train

The tram-train concept is based on the use of existing rail infrastructure to run urban tramways with the aim of providing an uninterrupted link between suburban communities and the city centre.

Since 1995, SYSTRA, with its extensive skills in transport planning and engineering in the twin fields of urban and rail transport, has been at the cutting edge of tram-train developments in France. In 1997, under the aegis of GART, SYSTRA published a reference work entitled ’Tramways heading out of town’ ( Quand le tramway sort de la ville).

SYSTRA was therefore behind a number of periurban service projects such as those in Nantes, Lyon and Mulhouse, where the Thur valley service today represents one of the most advanced tram-train projects in France.
