Track engineers establish route studies, identify rail track systems, modernise the existing network, supervise work and ensure the correct implementation of installations.
Track engineers are involved in the decision making process relating to different types of technology (track with or without ballast) and the necessary equipment for each individual project.
They organise interfaces with other activities (civil engineering, catenary, third rail, signalling), depending on the type of structure planned (bridge, tunnel etc.).
Serge, track engineer
"We work on the construction of new lines, as well as on the refurbishment, modernisation or extension of existing lines. This could be for LRTs, MRTs, trains (conventional, TGV or heavy-load).
In this job, experience is everything. We need ready-trained engineers. The hardest jobs abroad are the short contracts. Time is so much of the essence that it can become very stressful. It’s really useful if you can speak pretty good English. It helps you to work more independently. If not, the stress of having to learn the language adds to the stress of the project.
The ideal candidate must be open minded and diplomatic, because he or she will come into contact with people from very different cultures ; what works in France doesn’t necessarily work abroad. You have to know how to get the best out of everyone."
