The population of Shenzen, at the gateway to Hong Kong, has grown from a few million to seven million over 20 years. The city is equipping itself with a metro network which will cover 240 km on eight lines when finished. The first two lines were launched in 2004.

The first phase of the network construction covers lines 1 and 4. An estimated 1,890,000 passengers a day will use line 1 and an estimated 990,000 will use line 4. All installations on the two lines are underground with the exception of one station.
SYSTRA has been involved in this project from the outset, assisting the owner with feasibility and design studies for line 1. From 1999, SYSTRA was in charge of the supervision of tunnel construction.
