Santiago Chile Metro

SYSTRA has been a partner in the development of transport in Santiago, Chile for 40 years, often working alongside CADE IDEPE, the Chilean engineering company.

SYSTRA drew up the first designs for the Santiago Transport Plan and later oversaw the engineering and launch of line 1 of the metro in 1975, followed by line 2 and subsequent extensions. Line 5 was launched in 1997 and its first extension to the west in 2000. The metro system uses pneumatic technology, which is particularly suited to this seismic area. Line 5, which runs overground, works on the U-shaped viaduct design developed by SYSTRA.

SYSTRA also worked on maintenance studies and pricing policy.

From 2002, a medium-term transport plan, aimed at doubling the size of the network by 2005 to around an additional 40km of line, was undertaken by the government and the city of Santiago. This culminated in the creation of a new line, 4 and 4A, and the extension of the existing lines 2 and 5, to create a fully integrated network.

Line 4 (24 km) was inaugurated on 30th November 2005 and line 4A (8 km) in August 2006. These are wide-gauge iron tracks, with a third rail providing a power supply of 750 volts. The track is on a concrete base with 7.7 km of viaduct and the rest at ground level or in tunnels.

Lines 2 and 5 have also been extended.

SYSTRA, again in association with its Chilean partner CADE IDEPE, took part in all the phases of this project from the initial studies in 2002.

Since January 2009, SYSTRA is once again providing assistance to the Santiago Metro in Chile for a review of design, and for the construction and commissioning of the extension to line 1 in the direction of Los Dominicos (around 4 km in length) and the extension to line 5 as far as Maipu (around 14 km). Both lines are designed to carry trains that run on rubber tyres.
