Rail Planning Engineer

Rail planning engineers optimise the organisation of intercity, suburban and goods traffic. They identify corridor and station capacities and make recommendations for future growth in traffic (organisation, network, signalling). They carry out studies prior to projects, so as to evaluate feasibility. The operational scenarios they work on, enable the viability of a project to be assessed, for example the opening of a rail line in a given context.

Arnaud, expert in rail operation and planning

"I’m project manager for rail planning and operation studies. I mostly work with transport ministries or national authorities to optimise investment in network reorganisation or in the construction of new rail lines.

My career path is fairly unusual because before, I was a train driver for five years and I heard of SYSTRA when I decided to go back to studying. My experience in the railways, together with my desire to learn, were the key elements in being selected to work for SYSTRA’s transport planning department.

Since I started, I’ve been able to take part in very different projects, both here in France and abroad, for example the construction of a high-speed line in the Ukraine where I had to plan what type of service to implement."
