Project leaders or managers manage and coordinate highly complex, multidisciplinary and multicultural rail or urban transport projects, with many people involved in the project and many stakeholders.
As very highly qualified managers, they are able to bring the design and construction of an MRT, LRT or railway line to successful completion. They carry out these projects with a dedicated team of around 100 people, often as part of a consortium of companies which they head.
They guarantee that the company fulfils its commitments and objectives to both the customer and senior management.
Hervé, project manager
Hervé, project manager for a tramway project, is team leader of a group of engineers working on the designs for the tramway and site supervision.
"The project manager is the lynch pin between the company and the customer and is accountable to both.
What really motivates me is that the job is never routine. At the start of a new project, I always feel like I’m starting out on something new. I constantly have to adapt to new contexts in terms of the people, the job or the cultural environment.
The jobs I’ve done overseas in London, or in the Philippines, have taught me how to listen and question things, comparing my way of working with that of my foreign colleagues."
