The Mulhouse tram-train network has one periurban line running around the outskirts of the city using the existing rail lines, and two urban lines. Only the urban lines are currently being developed.

The launch of the first section of the urban network took place in May 2006. The third line around the city will serve the Thur valley and 36 km of its route will run on SNCF track. The tram-trains used specifically on this line will be specially designed to be compatible with both types of track.
SYSTRA has been involved in public transport studies of the region since the nineties and has also carried out a feasibility study.
The engineering consortium led by SYSTRA, was later appointed to manage the urban tram-train part of the project, in particular the pre-project and project, assistance with work contracts, studies on track-building and associated work, coordination and supervision of the construction and launch phases. This role covered all equipment and systems, bridges and tunnels, the depot, interconnections and park-and-ride facilities.
