Manilla MRT3 (Philippines)

Manilla, the capital and main port of the Phillipines, has 13.4 million inhabitants. Construction of the MRT network began in the 1980s.

The present network has three lines :

  • LRT1 : 15km, 18 stations ;
  • MRT3 : 16.8 km, 13 stations ; and
  • MRT2 : 4.3 km, 4 stations.

The MRT3 line, known as the Metrostar, runs mostly overground. It runs north-south following the city’s main arterial route, the EDSA.

Construction was carried out under a special BLT “Build, Lease, Transfer” concession contract. A planned extension to the north will add an extra 7.2 km to the line.

The MRT3 line uses a double electrified track. It comprises 9.6 km of viaduct, 5.5 km at ground level and 1.7 km of tunnel. The signalling system is equipped with ATP (Automatic Train Protection).
