Delhi, the capital of India and the country’s third largest city, has 13 million inhabitants. Public transport relied almost entirely on buses until 1995, when the city decided to equip itself with a metro with a total length of 198.5 km.
In the same section
Construction work on the first phase (three lines) began in 1998 :
- Line 1 : 22.06 km and 18 stations (overhead line with one section at ground level) ;
- Line 2 : 11 km and 10 stations (underground line) ; and
- Line 3 : 22.8 km and 22 stations (overhead line with 1.1 km underground). A second phase will extend the line to 31 km and 30 stations.
SYSTRA participated in all three projects.
For line 1, SYSTRA won three pre-project detailed design contracts : the design of ballastless track and track laying, design studies for the traction, electrification, power supply and the SCADA system and a detailed pre-project design for the Shastri Park depot and workshop.
SYSTRA also prepared detailed pre-project designs for the Khyber Pass depot and workshop for line 2 and worked on the parameters and methods for testing and design of the ballastless track for the underground sections.
For line 3, SYSTRA carried out the preliminary study and prepared tender documents for the construction contracts, pre-project studies and construction plans. SYSTRA was also responsible for the architectural design of the structure of the overhead section, methods of execution, station equipment, electric traction and track.
Throughout construction, SYSTRA provided technical assistance to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in overseeing the design.
Characteristics of the Project
The overhead section used the « U-shaped » viaduct technology developed by SYSTRA, enabling construction costs and deadlines to be reduced. The architectural design of the stations combines traditional Indian architecture with modern architecture.
The entire network is composed of ballastless track.
