Clermont-Ferrand tramway (France)

Clermont-Ferrand chose an innovative solution for its first 14 km tramway line. The Translohr, a tram on tyres, is the first of its kind in use.

The Translohr tramway is guided by a single central rail. Each bogey is equipped with a guidance system, composed of two V-shaped rollers which grip the rail. Electric power is supplied using an overhead contact line.

Since the beginning of the nineties, SYSTRA has carried out studies on the Clermont city public transport plan. In 2001 the Union of Public Transport (SMTC) appointed SYSTRA to provide assistance to the owner.

This role covered the drafting of tender documents and the analysis of bids for the system contract, preparing specifications for the choice of project manager, definition, supervision and inspection of contracts, and drawing up applications for authorisation (DUP planning consent, licence application and grant application documents etc.). SYSTRA also had a general, organisational role, providing technical advice, particularly with regard to the implementation of safety procedures.
