The Basarab bridge, which takes its name from the nearby metro station, is designed to improve traffic flows in the north-west of Bucarest.
The bridge, which will be 1,900 m long and will link Titulescu Boulevard to the Grozavesti district, will carry both road and tramway traffic. It will cross the Plevnei-Orhideea-Giulesti intersection and Grozavesti bridge, as well as the rail tracks of North station. A stop built above the lines will provide connections with tramway, train and metro, with lifts and escalators providing direct access for passengers to the platforms.
SYSTRA is re-launching this project which was interrupted in 2002 after policy disagreements between the local authority and the government. SYSTRA, in partnership with the Romanian engineering company, METROUL, is responsible for assisting the owner from tendering to launch of the project. The contract is due to last 46 months.
